Writing

Writing is the representation of language in a textual medium through the use of a set of signs or symbols (known as a writing system). It is distinguished from illustration, such as cave drawing and painting, and non-symbolic preservation of language via non-textual media, such as magnetic tape audio.

Writing most likely began as a consequence of political expansion in ancient cultures, which needed reliable means for transmitting information, maintaining financial accounts, keeping historical records, and similar activities. Around the 4th millennium BC, the complexity of trade and administration in Mesopotamia outgrew human memory, and writing became a more dependable method of recording and presenting transactions in a permanent form. In both Ancient Egypt and Mesoamerica writing may have evolved through calendrics and a political necessity for recording historical and environmental events. The oldest known use of writing in China was in divination in the royal court.

What is the writing process like for you?
Q. I'm really curious because it seems like there are so many people on here writing novels or short stories. I mean, do you just start writing? Do you Brainstorm and make a chart or something? Do you write everything in order? Do you edit it as you go? Just give any detail. (: I used to write in middle school but I've lost it as a hobby. I wish I could just pick up again.

A. I write semi-short stories and poetry. The process of writing a story goes somewhat like this: A line from the story knocks me on the head. I write it down and forget about it. The title knocks me on the head. I remember the line and devote a page to the idea in one of my notebooks. The plot turns up, usually when I'm supposed to be doing something else. It is also usually incomplete. Scenes start to pop up in my head and I begin to write them in no particular order. I make a list of significant questions about the plot I need to answer, then sit down and bash my brains out trying to answer them. When that's done, I have a vague idea of what it's going to be like, so I make a timeline of events organized by day. Which turns up a lot more… [cont.]

A. Sounds like your homework. here's one thing that will change: Professors get even MORE cranky when they find out that you are having other people do your homework, than high school teachers do.
