List of Alleged Brazilian Supercentenarians Information

This is an incomplete list of purported Brazilian supercentenarians (people who may have attained the age of at least 110 years), ordered by date of birth. Only one of these claims are recognized by the GRG, an institution that studies and reports on human longevity.

In October 2007, the Brazilian National Institute of Welfare declared that there were 159 Brazilian supercentenarians.[1] This would correspond to approximately one supercentenarian per million inhabitants. Japan, the country whose inhabitants exhibit with one of the world's longest average life expectancy,[2] has a rate six times lower. Brazil is further down on the life expectancy charts.[2][3]

The Brazilian National Institute's declaration strains credulity. For the remainder of the world, only one case of a human whose lifespan extended beyond 120 years is considered proven.[4] Systematic study of these Brazilian cases has not yet been performed, as validation or repudiation of the Institute's claims is difficult; none of the cases has yet been documented in a manner that meets the standards employed by modern, scientific longevity researchers, such as those affiliated with the GRG.[5] However, a Brazilian woman named Maria Gomes Valentim became validated.[5]

Centenarians (people whose lifespan surpassed one-hundred years) are the oldest Brazilian population that has ever been the object of a relevant statistical study.[6] A survey was made in Brazil, in 2008, comparing the number of centenarians with the number of 85-year-olds. In 1991, a centenarian rate of 16.0% was found for Brazil, based on the survey. If this figure were credible, Brazil would lead all countries, among those that have been studied, with the United States in second place, with a rate of 5.8%.

Using standard statistical methods of analysis, the authors of the Brazilian study tried to calculate a more credible number for Brazilian centenarians. Depending of the region, they concluded that the real number of centenarians might be between two and 16 times smaller than the claimed number. This fits with research establishing a general tendency for age exaggeration, with claimed lifespans of 100, 110 or 120 years for people whose accurate age may be several years younger.[6]

Although modern statistical analysis suggests that the number of supercentenarian claimed by the Brazilian Institute is subject to significant doubt, it is impossible to know which individual claims may be inaccurate. GRG's specialists, volunteers and correspondents agree that age claims beyond 120 years, while unlikely, have a probability of accuracy greater than zero (since it was already done by Jeanne Calment),[4] but it is generally accepted that claims beyond 130 years can be considered untrue and should be referred to as "age myths".[7]
