From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as, etc. If three or more items are being compared, the corresponding superlative needs to be used instead. StructureThe structure of a comparative in English consists normally of the positive form of the adjective or adverb, plus the suffix -er, or (in the case of polysyllabic words borrowed from foreign languages) the modifier more (or less/fewer) before the adjective or adverb. The form is usually completed by than and the noun which is being compared, e.g. "He is taller than his father", or "The village is less picturesque than the town nearby". Than is used as a subordinating conjunction to introduce the second element of a comparative sentence while the first element expresses the difference, as in "Our new house is larger than the old one", "There is less water in Saudi Arabia than in the United States", "There are fewer people in Canada than in California." Q. Mr. Howell can pick 1 pineapple per hour, or 1 coconut. Mrs. Howell can pick 2 pineapples per hour, but it takes her two hours to pick a coconut. Who has a comparative advantage in picking pineapples? In picking coconuts? Which of the two should specialize in which tasks? Assume that Mr. And Mrs. Howell had originally been separated from each other, and that they originally each spent 12 hours per day working, spending 6 hours picking pineapples and 6 hours picking coconuts. How will their total production change if they find each other and begin to specializing. Asked by B. - Tue Apr 7 21:55:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can compute each person's efficiency at both tasks thru ratios: In one hour's work: Mr Howell: 1 pineapple / 1 coconut = 1.0 pineapple per coconut Mrs Howell: 2 pineapples / 0.5 coconut = 4.0 pineapples per coconut Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking pineapples, Mrs Howell's comparative advantage is in picking coconuts Mrs Howell should focus on coconuts and Mrs Howell on pineapples Originally, Mr. Howell would have produced 6 pineapples and 6 coconuts, and Mrs. Howell would have produced 12 pineapples and 3 coconuts. So their total production would be 18 pineapples and 9 coconuts. By specializing, In 12 hours, Mrs. Howell will produce 24 pineapples and Mr Howell will produce 12 coconuts. So their total… [cont.] Answered by WarrenBB - Wed Apr 8 15:09:17 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "comparative" Bidder attracted by Uruguay's advantage - Stuff.co.nz
