SynonymsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to be the fundamental axioms of modern biology:
Subdisciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interrelate with their environment. I realize that many people feel emotional release from crying, but I am interested in the biological/phisiological causes and effects relating to the crying process. Can anyone explain? I am specifically looking for the physical causes and effects of crying. Do these hormones have any physical effects, or just emotional? Asked by Mike - Tue Jul 15 01:05:53 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Crying often happens when the eye is irritated by something foreign like dirt. The tears work to flush the eye out and try to remove the foreign particle. Also, tears contain enzymes that help protect the eye from infection. When a person is physically hurt, the body receives a pain signal and tears often flow. It's like self-defense. The body is getting ready to keep the eyes from getting infected. Also the enzymes in tears can help kill bacteria on the skin when they travel down the face. Also, what are some biological mutations? Asked by panic-at-the-disco-kicks-ass - Sun Feb 28 18:53:39 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not sure what you're referring to as "mutations" in the basic context. Biological mutations are basically changes in DNA structure for an organism. Examples of biological mutations include: *Insertions or Deletions of nucleotides in the DNA *Nondisjunction of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids during meiosis or mitosis in which daughter cells receive more chromosomes than they should have. Nondisjunction results in Downs Syndrome in which there are three copies of chromosome 21 where there should only be two Answered by Aaron - Sun Feb 28 22:47:41 2010 What types of bonds a present between atoms in biological systems?
Q. I have to create a chart to summarize bonds between atoms in biological systems but the only 2 kinds I can think of are ionic and peptide bonds. What other kinds are there? and what are the bonds in the body like? Thanks. Asked by Meg - Sun Feb 28 21:47:24 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Covalent bonds are pretty prevalent, as are hydrogen bonds and van Der Waal's interactions, which are really important in determing protein conformation. Those last two aren't "true" bonds, but they do hold stuff together. Answered by Sean - Sun Feb 28 21:55:04 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "biological" Solis: Interpreting families - QNotes
