A. Hands-down, the most important quality to possess in order to be a fantastic adolescent psychotherapist is PATIENCE. :) In addition, compassion, good boundaries, and dedication to your work are essential. An indepth working knowledge of the issues adolescents most frequently struggle with is incredibly helpful as well... Good luck!

what is Adolescent Psychology class like in college?
Q. Im thinking about taking this at a college im going to.
Asked by HaserX - Thu May 13 18:08:49 2010 - Psychology - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It will cover topics like developmental psychology, and adolescent-related issues. Unfortunately, at the college I attended, we mainly watched a lot of videos or gabbed about related things we read about in the news. Your class may be filled with obnoxious people of a variety of ages, some who seem to think they are already practicing Psychologists. They will blatantly announce whether they are Freudians, and many may appear to be analyzing eachother. And they wonder why it's oftentimes referred to as a 'fluff' course! lol

How hard is adolescent psychology?
Q.
Asked by joey - Thu Aug 7 14:25:48 2008 - Psychology - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Generally life development psychology is easier compared to some subjects in psych. You really have to be able to differentiate stages in life, know what is appropriate development vs what is not at certain ages. Learning this becomes a foundation when you see abnormal kids, you can see them playing out stages that perhaps a 10 year old would be in, even though they are 16. I find it to be enjoyable, and since you were once an adolescent you can draw from personal experience.

I need a title for my Adolescent Psychology paper about stress, depression, and suicide?
Q. I'm writing my research paper about how if overlooked stress can lead to depression which can then lead to suicide in adolescents. But I can not think of a good title. Help?
Asked by steviefaye - Tue Apr 19 13:55:40 2011 - Homework Help - 1 Answers - Comments

A. "Stress: Society's Lesser-known (or "Under the Radar") Killer." (If killer is too dramatic, go for convict or something like that. Use a thesaurus.) or perhaps, "Suicide Prevention: Easier (or "Less complicated") than you would think." or "Stress - An occasional irritant that can have a deadly ending." All depends on how dramatic you want to sound, and what direction you're going in with your paper. If anything, that should get the creative juices flowing :) Good luck!

A. Be careful with assumptions. You can not be sure that you are interpreting the responses correctly. Even if a person says you are correct - they may be just trying to make you happy. That being said, you may be interested in reading up on "Projective personality tests" such as the Rorschach inkblot test, the thematic Apperception test, House, Tree, Person drawings etc... I googled the term on wikipedia to find you a good starting point for some reading and found a decent explanation in wikipedia. I am not sure I agree with the author's conclusion that the tests always lack reliability and validity but this is a good starting point for you. P.S., to "George Haups," don't be obnoxious :-)

A. Wikipedia is a wealth of free information. The good part about it, when you go there, look at the column on the left, where you will see: Print/export Create a book Download as PDF Printable version That is very useful, because you can make your very own reference library on the subject, and home in on what you need to know very quickly. Adolescent Psychology: Kohlberg and Piaget vs Erikson and Freud (Cognitive reasoning)?
Q. Adolescences, involves ages (12-18), is a time of confusing emotions and mixed messages, however do the greatest minds of psychological development disagree unknowingly on the fundamental thought of Adolescence. Kohlberg developed the stages of moral development, where he describes six planes of moral thinking on three different levels. The Utmost level having the ability to reason from the perspectives of all subjects involved in a matter. Now Piaget who developed the cognitive development grade lists ages of 11 or above with the ability to think abstractly which correlates to Kolhberg's final level of thinking. However Piaget does mention some people never reach this phases of upper thinking. But this is where Erikson differs. Erikson… [cont.]

A. No. Adolescents are not developing their moral reasoning, cognitive ability, or psychosexual urges sooner than past generations. This is not evolution. As a matter of fact, children are remaining under their parent's roofs longer than they use to 100 years ago. That's not evolution, that's de-evolution.

What do you think of Criminal profiling or adolescent psychology as a career?
Q.
Asked by Taylor T - Tue Oct 16 22:04:45 2007 - Psychology - 4 Answers - Comments

A. The current zeitgeist in Child Psychology, and where the money is, is in neuropsychology and neuropsychological testing. Second would be in risk assessment for suicide, drug use, and inappropriate sexual behavior (mostly in adults, but possibly adolescents as well). There is a growing need for people to provide treatment services for people with Autistic Spectrum Behaviors. Criminal profiling probably falls in the realm of Forensic Psychology and Forensic Assessment, a burgeoning field.

Teens: Have any of you been to a psychologist that specializes in adolescent psychology?
Q. My twin sister is going to be going to one soon (although she doesn't know that yet lol), so that hopefully she can work out why she has been rebelling for the past 2 years. I am so hoping this works to get her back on the right track as I am so afraid that something bad is going to happen to her, and I want my twin back, I feel like I don't even have a twin anymore as she rarely talks to me and usually when she does talk to me it's not to say anything nice to me. What was it like going to the psychologist? Trying to get other people's experiences so that I can tell my twin and hopefully that will make her feel better about going to see the psychologist. Thanks Jaz

A. Many people believe that therapy is an insult or the end of the world, but that's wrong. They are just helping you make your life better. I'm going to say that you're sister will go insane and make all kind of threats (I have a step-sister like your twin). The therapist will just talk and she doesn't have to talk about anything that she doesn't want to. These people are kind and willing to help. As for you, you're a saint. Your sister needs you. God bless.
